“The strongest, toughest men all have compassion. They’re not heartless and cold. You have to be man enough to have compassion — to care about people and about your children.” – Denzel Washington

Let’s get started…
I had lunch with Romeo Dimaano, father of two, and owner of Active Spine & Sports Care. Active Spine & Sports Care is a multidisciplinary office that offers Chiropractic, Sports Rehabilitation, Post Partum Rehabilitation & Lactation Support, Acupuncture, and Functional Nutrition. The services are offered out of two locations in Camarillo and Ventura. During our conversation, we discussed a variety of topics, including our shared upbringing in Oxnard, our families, dealing with childhood back pain, deviated septa (did you know that was plural for ‘septum’?), and how to maintain good health as adults.
Romeo is an alumnus of Channel Islands High School. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a medical doctor. His aspirations were not fueled by Doogie Houser MD reruns as were mine, but rather by a playground slide accident that left him with persistent back pain. Despite visiting countless medical doctors, as well as a Filipino witch doctor (not kidding), Romeo resigned himself to a life of pain.

Romeo and his family.
After graduating from Long Beach State, he began working at a multi-disciplinary sports rehab office. One day, when he was experiencing a monthly flare-up of his chronic back pain, a chiropractor in the office asked if he could adjust Romeo's spine. After the adjustment, Romeo felt a significant improvement in his overall health. Over the next six months, the monthly flare-ups that had previously plagued him disappeared. This experience spurred Romeo's curiosity and led him to pursue a career in chiropractic care.

I asked Romeo if he regretted not going to medical school. He said that he enjoys the types of conditions he gets to treat and the freedom his career provides. A positive work-life balance is one of Romeo’s top priorities. He enjoys having the ability to spend more time with his wife and children, and doing the activities he loves—strength training, mountain biking, and jiu-jitsu.
A notable quote from the conversation with Romeo: “Chiropractic care is about more than just treating spine and joint issues through adjustments; it's about promoting overall wellness.”
The rule of thumb is: If something has been bothering you, especially something lingering for more than 2 weeks, you should call Romeo.
Active Spine & Sports Care Camarillo is open Mon, Wed, & Fri from 8am-5pm; Tue & Thur from 3pm-6pm. The Ventura Office is open Tues & Thurs from 11am-2pm

Did you feel that? 😵💫
As a child, there wasn’t an earthquake I couldn’t sleep through. I was comfortably jiggling away in my bunk bed during the Northridge Quake of 94. I wouldn’t have woken up, but my parents barged through the bedroom door, jarring my brother and me from our slumber. Luckily, no humans, animals, or items were harmed during the earthquake. That incident did leave one feeling of uneasiness that has permeated through my adult life, as well as California culture and folklore. It has colloquially been coined “The Big One.” The 2015 film “San Andreas” featuring The Rock Dwayne Johnson, capitalizes on Californians’ fear of “The Big One.” For those of you who aren’t familiar with the film, the infamous San Andreas Fault triggers a 9.0 earthquake, causing the earth to split easier than The Rock’s t-shirts. All jokes aside, The Rock did what any good dad would do and flew a helicopter from LA to San Francisco, which is the show-biz equivalent of my dad running from the couch to my bedroom to check on me.

I’m sure most of you have at least one doomsday prepper in the family or a drunk uncle who gets a few too many in his system and likes to let phrases like this fly: “You know we’re due for a big one right? You better have water and ammunition stored” This year alone, Ventura County has experienced 280 earthquakes. It turns out 280 quakes in half a year is pretty standard for the region. Most of the earthquakes fall below a magnitude of 2.0, which the average person doesn’t tend to feel.
If you’ve ever been on your feet while a magnitude 4.0 earthquake or higher hits, you’ve probably felt a touch of vertigo. In Japan, this feeling is called “jishin-yoi” which roughly translates to “earthquake drunk.” I’ve experienced this feeling while at a restaurant. Let me tell you, it is a great way to curb your appetite. Whether “the big one” ever comes or not is still up for debate, but the one thing that isn’t: You should probably have fresh water stored!

Message from the authors:
Father’s Day is a time to celebrate all of the hard-working fathers out there, past and present. The ones that work all day, and still make time for their children and partners. It truly does take a village and community to raise responsible children. Your hard work may seem to go unnoticed sometimes but trust me; it’s invaluable. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Continue to be a great role model to your children. Continue to love & support your partner, but don’t forget to kick your feet up and relax today. Cheers, fellas. MV & CS
