How does a company start from nothing, grow and thrive for 45 years, and sell items for less than they cost?

Only by building long term relationships. That means innovating, executing, and taking care of every customer like they are the most important person in the world.

But even more than that, it means caring. Caring about customers, caring about employees, caring about quality, and caring about doing the right thing.

Let Queensboro show you the secret of their 45-year success. Let them do what they love and put your logo on a custom-embroidered polo or hat for just $4.95, including logo setup and embroidery.

Ventura County! Thank you for joining us this week. We missed a week, but would like to address a typo we made two weeks ago. We mistakenly referred to Labor Day as Memorial Day. I was so excited about spending three days on Lake Nacimiento that I mixed up my holidays. Unfortunately, I cannot embed video into this newsletter, so I’m unable to share my wake surfing wipe-outs with you. 😬🏄‍♂️ 🤙

Week 1 of the NFL is in the books, and all of my pre-season predictions were wildly inaccurate. Go figure. On the bright side, the heat wave across the county has dropped to much more bearable temperatures. We have a lot to cover this week, a big foodie event at the Ventura County fairgrounds, a couple canceled events, local football news, and my presidential debate analysis. (joking) Without further ado, let’s get to it. 🌊

This week, The Neighborly Wave will cover:

  • Real estate news brought to you by V is for Ventura

  • Human Design

  • Local Events

  • Sports

  • My favorite places to watch football

  • Weather

Human Design

What is Human Design? Great question because I had no idea myself. Human Design is a holistic system of self-knowledge that combines ancient and modern disciplines to help people understand their purpose in life and who they are. It mixes astrology, the Chinese I Ching, Judaic Kabbalah, Vedic Philosophy, modern physics, astronomy, genetics, and biochemistry. If that sounds like a lot, I agree with you. I’ve been a cynic since birth but approached this with an open and curious mind. Human Design uses a bodily energy system very similar to the Chakra system, so if you’re familiar with that, it will help make sense of it all. There are nine bodily energy systems in HD. I’ll start with the top and work my way down. I’ll also include a graphic for my visual learners.

  1. The head crown. 2. Mind/Ajna. 3. Throat. 4. Identity. 5. Ego/Heart 6. Emotional solar plexus. 7. Spleen. 8. Sacral. 9. Root

Now that you have the basics, let’s move on to phase two. Five human design types are used to categorize personality traits. They are listed below:

  1. Generators (36 % of the population). 2. Manifesting Generators (32% of the pop.) 3. Projectors (22% of the pop.). 4. Manifesters ( 9% of the pop). 5. Reflectors (1 % of the pop.)

After having my dear friend Jenna create my design chart, I learned I am a Manifesting Generator. Manifesting Generators aim to inspire, create, and energize others through their unique gifts and work. 💁‍♂️ For anyone that has ever read a horroscope and felt like it was incredibly accurate, that’s how I felt reviewing the five pages that she printed out for me. I wouldn’t dare bore you with it all, but instead, I will share the comments that resonated with me the most. The first one that hit me right in the gut was, “You need to do a lot at the same time, and need to constantly be in the creative process to use up all of your energy or you could get stuck, making you feel sick and depressed. You have often been told to “slow down,” or “pick one thing and stick to it” but that is not you and this is bad advice. You need chaos and lots of activity and variety- not all of your projects will bear fruit but the creative expression is what is important.” 😅 Aside from being freakishly accurate, it made me wish I was armed with this information 20 years ago. I’ve always tended to work on multiple projects at one time, and to read more than one book at a time. I wasn’t sure if it was ADHD, being quick to bore, or having mood swings, and I still don’t quite understand the nuances of my madness, but it was incredibly fascinating to see it spelled out for me.

Two other quick notes from my design profile that I will share with you have to do with health, and food. Health and food have always been important to me. I grew up in a pretty healthy household, especially by 90’s standards. My parents were big gym rats. My mother always cooked for us. Vegetables were a part of every meal, and I still feel my best when I’m eating lots of leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables. My father was my first gym partner. He was a big fan of the “ok, one more rep” tactic, which was never one more rep. It was five more reps of him doing most of the heavy lifting and me squirming on the bench. IYKYK. My design chart states that I need to burn all my energy during the day, or I will have trouble sleeping, and that is also incredibly accurate. If I don’t exercise, I often wake up at 3 am, unable to fall back asleep until 20 minutes before my alarm goes off.

The final thing I will share is that there are 6 different Human Design environments. Caves, markets, kitchens, mountains, valleys, and shores. My environment is the kitchen. The kitchen environment suggests an individual’s desire to connect with people. The kitchen also signifies the importance of health, balanced with nutrition, and the role of communal eating in fostering social bonds. It encourages individuals to recognize the vital role that food and shared meals play in human connection. Those are not my words, but I could not have put in better myself.

In conclusion, whether you believe the stars can define our personality, the date and time that we were born, or external forces beyond our control and understanding or whether it all sounds like mumbo jumbo to you, it’s an interesting self-examination exercise. You don’t need to believe in astrology or read a daily horoscope to have honest, reflective conversations with yourself or others. I found this exercise to be entertaining, enlightening, and refreshing. If you are also a Manifesting Generator, remember that having several projects simultaneously is ok. If someone suggests you focus on just one, let them know where the suggestion box is. The trash. 🗑 🤗

Sports

One week into the NFL season, and my fantasy football teams all seem destined for failure. The NFL is making it increasingly more difficult and expensive to watch every game, as they terminate old cable and streaming deals, and engage in new ones. This season you would need the following services to watch every single game: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Peacock, and a cable or streaming service that has NFL Network, ESPN, ABC, CBS, NBC, & FOX. 😑

The Dodgers Shohei Otani looks to become the first MLB player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in one season. The Dodgers remain in first place in the NL West, and are 4.5 games ahead of The Arizona Diamondbacks.

Moorpark College has a home football game this Saturday at 6pm against Gold Coast College. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here: https://moorpark.vbotickets.com/events

My Favorite Places to Watch Football in the County

This is a re-post, in case you missed it.

Cronies Bar & Grill. Cronies has 5 locations, but three of them stand out above the rest. Ventura, Camarillo, and Newbury Park. What separates Cronie’s from other sports bars? Ice cold schooners, and well placed televisions.

BLVD Burger in Camarillo. BLVD’s food is significantly better than the average sports bar. Their beer selection is top notch, and rotates regularly. It’s also family friendly. I’ve yet to have a drunk person yell in my face about why this year is their teams year, and that’s a huge plus in my book.

Social Tap in Ventura also happens to be one of my favorite places to catch UFC Fights. They have TV’s spread out throughout the entire restaurant, and a large menu that can satisfy both picky and bougie eaters.

Boney Mountain Pizza Company in Newbury Park. This is a great place to watch football. They must have 20 TV’s throughout the building. The pizza isn’t my favorite, but I’m a bit of a pizza snob. The chicken wings are solid, they have a full bar, and over 20 beers on draft. The other selling point is their padded chairs. If you butt is as flat as mine, you’ll appreciate them too.

Honorable mention: Finney’s Craft House in Ventura or Camarillo. The Westlake location is a little too small to gather for football games.
