“At sea I learned how little a person needs, not how much.” – Captain Robin Lee Graham
Ventura County! Thank you for joining us this week. It’s officially my favorite time of year. It’s cold enough to wear a hoodie in the morning despite the blistering heat we’ve been getting by midday. All four major professional sports leagues are in season. The NBA 🏀 season began this week, our hometown Dodgers are in the World Series against the New York Yankees, the NFL season is approaching the midway mark, and the NHL season is two weeks in. What a time to be a sports fan!
Now for the dark side of Fall 🍁 … yes I’m referring to the earlier sunsets, the upcoming time change on Sunday, November 3rd, and the fact that my Costco-sized Halloween candy bag looks more like a regular-sized candy bag 😳 That’s enough talk about my sugar addiction. We have a lot to cover this week. We’re talking sports, nautical activities and history, and local events. Without further ado, let's catch this week’s wave! 🌊
Neighbors, this week’s edition of The Neighborly Wave will feature:

Oh Captain my Captain
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
-Written by Walt Whitman
A very popular yet sorrowful poem by Walt Whitman. The captain he speaks of is Abraham Lincoln, and “the vessel” is a metaphor for the United States, which was concluding a civil war. We have been incredibly fortunate not to have had a war on our soil since the Civil War ended in April 1865. With major elections around the corner, I want to take a moment to remind everyone how fortunate we are. Immigrants venture here in mass, leaving their homelands and families behind because they aren’t as fortunate as we are. Wars are happening in various countries all over the world. Civil wars, wars against corrupt governments, wars against neighboring nations, and wars against cartels. These wars are incredibly disruptive to people’s daily lives. Loved ones are lost, businesses are ruined, and entire cities have to be rebuilt. The effects of war can last for decades. I encourage everyone to vote for politicians who are empathetic and keenly aware of the devastation war causes. ☮️

Channel Islands National Park
Local Nautical Activities
We are incredibly fortunate to be so close to the Ocean. Waterways have been instrumental to human growth and our transition from hunter-gatherers into townspeople. From ancient Mesopotamia to the present-day United States, cities have all blossomed along significant waterways. Las Vegas being a rare exception. If you look at a map of this country, you will notice that most of its major cities depend on rivers, lakes, or oceans. The Pacific Ocean is filled with sea life and year round activities, although some of them are certainly more enjoyable during the Summer. I will provide you with a list of activities ranging from very adventurous to very chill.
Channel Islands Harbor
Channel Islands Harbor offers the following on water activities:

The Ventura Harbor Village
Aside from being dog friendly 🦮 🤗 The Ventura Harbor Village offers many similar water activities, as well as fantastic dining options.

Sports

Father & Son duo, Lebron & Bronny James making history.
I’d be remiss not to talk about the year LA sports is having. We’ll start with basketball. On Tuesday, Lebron and Bronny James became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game together. Lebron James is in his 21st season and seems to be aging gracefully. The Lakers won their opening night game against the Minnesota Timberwolves and play again this Friday, October 25th, at 7pm against the Phoenix Suns.
The Dodgers have now won 4 of the last 7 National League pennants. They have an incredibly challenging World Series ahead of them, as they are short-staffed in the pitching department and facing a Yankee team that can hit home runs like they’re playing on a little league field. Ticket Prices are the talk of the town, as the cheapest tickets available for Game 1 this Friday are around $1200 per ticket 😳. Those prices go up for Saturday’s game 2, and I can only imagine how much tickets will cost if the series comes back to LA for games 6 and 7.
Los Angeles Clippers fans, where you at? “crickets” JK. The perennial stepchildren of Los Angeles sports have a new stadium but the same woes. All-Star Kawhi Leonard is expected to be out with an injury until December 1st, and James Harden’s shooting percentage is as bad as mine was at 24 hr fitness the other day 😬. The Clippers can’t seem to catch a break, but they have a long season ahead of them.
Trade Rumors are circulating around some of the Los Angeles Ram fan favorites. Injuries have plagued the team the last few years, and this year is no different. Former Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp has been mentioned in these trade talks. Kupp and fellow receiver Puka Nacua have only played in 3 combined games this season. The Rams currently have a record of 2-4 and sit at the bottom of the NFC West.
Seafarers
Without using Google, what would you guess if I asked you how long humans have been sailing the seas? The number will shock you. I will give the caveat that this number is up for debate, but as we uncover more and more of our past and as archaeological technology improves, we can better understand our past. Carbon dating wasn’t even developed until the late 1940’s. That technology alone, changed the historical timeline of numerous events. I still haven’t answered the question so here it is: 50,000 years! It’s truly an incredible feat. Most people’s experience with woodworking is making a bird feeder in shop class if it was even an offered elective. I opted for the auto mechanic class as my elective, where I learned how to change a car’s oil—a skill I have used once since 2002.
Early boats were fairly primitive, akin to modern-day kayaks; however, both the Austronesians and the Egyptians developed sailboats between 6-7000 years ago. These boats were more sophisticated and allowed for much further exploration. Ships have taken on many iterations over the centuries, culminating in the monstrosities of today, Cruise Ships. For those of you who haven’t seen the photo of The Titanic compared to a modern-day cruise ship, I’ll post it below.
